The one thing saving Josh McDaniels’ job might surprise you

As of now, the Raiders are 2-7. Next year, they currently line up to have the second overall pick in the draft. Quarterback Derek Carr broke down in tears after the loss to the Colts. Despite all this, head coach Josh McDaniels isn’t going anywhere. Apparently, his job is safe because owner Mark Davis is in some financial trouble.

Bill Plaschke of the L.A. Times reported that the Raiders are ‘cash-poor’ and Davis can’t afford to fire McDaniels despite an awful season.

Welp, now the Raiders are seemingly a literal poverty franchise.

As much as Davis is ruining the franchise, Plaschke is dead wrong on this one. This has never been an issue for the Davis family or the Raider organization. They clearly weren’t afraid to throw money at Davante Adams, Hunter Renfrow, Chandler Jones and Darren Waller. Allegiant Stadium has some of the most expensive seats in the NFL, not to mention playing in the tax-free city of Las Vegas.

Plaschke hasn’t liked this organization for years. Way back in 2003 he talked down on the great Al Davis, Mark’s father. It is Davis, who has lost much of his swash, and most of his buckle, but none of his mystique, he wrote. Yet after his death in 2011, Plaschke pretended Al was the greatest thing to happen in football. Hypocrite.

Some said this report made sense because of the huge contract they gave to Jon Gruden, who only lasted a few years before stepping down in 2021. 10 years for $100 million obviously had to go somewhere, and for some reason, people believe the Raiders are still paying Gruden. Those people are idiots, unfortunately. The team reached a settlement with Gruden a while ago, so his money has no impact on McDaniels.

Look, no one really knows what’s going on in that locker room. Maybe McDaniels is truly the problem, maybe he’s not. But saying the Raiders can’t afford to fire him is ridiculous. Al Davis would’ve let him go by now. Hue Jackson was fired after one season. Dennis Allen was fired midseason in 2014. I don’t want to hear they can’t “afford” it because that’s simply not true. But good effort, Plaschke!
